How is the value determined of my donated vehicle?
Your car donation to an IRS-approved 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization is still tax deductible and will fall into one of these categories:
- For vehicles sold for under $500, you can claim the fair market value up to $500.00 without any additional paperwork.
- If the gross proceeds for the sale of your donated vehicle exceeds $500.00, your deduction will be limited to the actual sale price.
We will provide you with a 1098-C stating the gross amount of the vehicle’s sale price. For more information, please review the IRS Car Donation Tax Laws, Publication 526 (Charitable Contributions) available online at www.irs.govor by calling (800) 829-3676 (toll-free).
How much of my donation will go to the charity I have chosen?
Driven to Donate grants a percentage -- typically 50% -- of the net proceeds from the sale of your vehicle to the nonprofit you have selected and retains the balance to cover the cost of operations of Driven to Donate and to support StepDenver’s program to help men overcome drug and alcohol addiction. While Driven to Donate strives to honor the designations of its donors, Driven to Donate maintains exclusive and full discretion and control over use of all vehicle contributions it receives. In the case where a donor makes a designation to a non-qualified organization, or in other similar circumstances, Driven to Donate will work with you to direct the contribution to a nonprofit authorized by the IRS.
What documents do I need to have to donate my vehicle?
At the time of your scheduled pick up you will need to have a free and clear title that has been signed appropriately and notarized if needed. If you have additional questions please feel free to contact us at 303-296-9020.
What if the title is in someone else’s name?
The person whose name is on the tile must sign the title or fill out additional paperwork. The person’s name who appears on the title is who will get the tax deduction.
How do I sign the title if it shows a different name or middle name?
You must sign the title as it is shown on the front of the title. If you do not, the title will be void and you may need to obtain a duplicate title. If you have additional questions please feel free to contact us at 303-296-9020.
My title is signed over to someone else, can I cross it off or write in the next section?
No; if you do this, your title will become void. You will need to get a duplicate title in your name. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at 303-296-9020.
There are two people listed on the title, do both of us need to sign?
Yes. If there are two owners listed on the front of a title, both people will need to sign as seller and as their name appears on the front of the title. If you have additional questions please feel free to contact us at 303-296-9020.
The title is in a deceased person's name. How do I complete the transfer of title?
The person handling the donation of the vehicle must have court authorization on behalf of the deceased person’s estate and provide appropriate documentation of that authorization. A copy of the deceased person’s death certificate is required with the title at the time of the vehicle donation.
Do I have to pay for transporting my vehicle?
Donors do not incur any costs, Driven to Donate will cover the cost of the pickup.
Can I cancel my insurance after the vehicle is picked up? What if something happens to my vehicle, will I have to claim any damage?
When we take possession of the vehicle, the donor is no longer liable for any damage, the vehicle will then be covered under our insurance and the donor may cancel their policy for said donated vehicle.
Can I drop off my vehicle?
Yes, you may drop off your donated vehicle to us along with the appropriately signed title. A 48 hour notice that you will be dropping off a vehicle is required.
